Fulmer Valley Brook

Fulmer Valley Brook is small tributary of Chenunda Creek, which it joins about a quarter mile west of the crossing at Fulmer Valley Road (the map pin is located at this crossing). This stream averages 10 to 12 feet in width and has a gravel bottom. Surrounded mainly by woodland and scrub-brush vegetation, there is extensive bank cover along the stream, and much of the stream is hard to see on the Google Map because of the encroaching vegetation. The vegetation shades the stream and is one of the main reasons Fulmer Valley Brook supports such a high-quality trout fishery, but it also makes much of this stream difficult to fish.

This high-quality trout stream is fishable all season. It holds wild brown and brook trout throughout its length, and several of its tributaries also hold wild trout. The most fishable portion of this stream extends from the mouth upstream to about a quarter mile above Clark Road, a distance of about 3 miles. Much of Fulmer Valley Brook upstream of Fulmer Valley Road near McAndrews Road is posted, but it's certainly worth asking for permission to fish this section. For a DEC technical brief on the trout population of this stream, see Links.

Fulmer Valley Brook, seen looking upstream from the crossing of Fulmer Valley Road near McAndrews Road. This is a productive section of the stream, but locals have told me it's all posted because of litter left by anglers. A landowner on nearby Chenunda Creek told me that he also posts his property against fishing for the same reason. But this doesn't mean it's not worth asking for permission to fish here. I got permission by talking to a landowner and offering to pick up litter.

Look for these signs along Fulmer Valley Brook upstream of the first crossing of Fulmer Valley Road. I didn't see any posted signs along the lower end of this stream, but locals told me that fishing is not allowed on the upstream section. Think before you leave garbage on someone else's property! "Fishing Permitted" signs can easily be replaced by posted signs.
