Hiltonville State Forest
Hiltonville State Forest comprises 999 acres of conifer plantations (pine and spruce) and natural hardwoods. Wildlife species commonly seen here include white-tail deer, ruffed grouse, rabbit, and turkey. This forest is adjacent to Jersey Hill State Forest and Karr Valley Creek State Forest.
Recreational opportunities here include hiking, snowmobiling, snowshoeing, cross-country skiing, mountain biking, horseback riding, hunting, trapping, camping, geocaching, bird watching, outdoor photography, and nature study. Some of these activities are discussed below.
Hiking, Snowmobiling, Snowshoeing, Cross-Country Skiing, Mountain Biking, and Horseback Riding
Access to the forest interior is provided by a single multi-use trail, local roads, state forest roads, snowmobile trails, and logging trails. (The map pin is located on a parking area along Dobson Road, immediately north of the multi-purpose trail.)
The Allegany County Federation of Snowmobilers maintain two marked snowmobile trails in this state forest. For a map of this trail, click on New York State Snowmobile Association Trails under Links, click on the Trails tab, select Trail C2 or C2C, and zoom in on Hiltonville State State Forest.
Fishing
Fishing is provided by a small wildlife pond located east of Norton Forest Road. I'm not sure of the species of fish found here, but they are likely to be panfish such pumpkinseeds and bullhead. The headwaters of the Canisteo River flow through the eastern side of this state forest and is paralleled and crossed by Sullivan Road. It is unlikely there are any fishing opportunities in this extreme upper reach of the river.
Hunting and Trapping
This state forest provides opportunities for both small game and big game hunting. Game species commonly found here include white-tailed deer and wild turkey. Hunting and trapping are permitted on the property in accordance with all game regulations, unless otherwise posted.
Camping
There are no formal campsites on this property; however, a primitive campsite is available off Dobson Road. Elsewhere, individuals may set up camp at any location that is at least 150 feet from water bodies, streams, roads, and trails. See Links for additional regulations.
Birding
Bird species commonly seen in this type of forest include various songbird species, wild turkey, ruffed grouse, and woodcock. An eBird listing of bird species observed at this location has not yet been posted. Click on eBird under Links to see how you can make a posting.
