Phillips Creek State Forest

Phillips Creek State Forest comprises 2,709 acres of conifers plantations and native hardwoods. Wildlife species commonly seen in this type of environment include white-tailed deer, rabbit, squirrel, turkey, ruffed grouse, and a variety of songbirds. This state forest is bordered by Turnpike State Forest.

Recreational opportunities here include hiking, snowmobiling, snowshoeing, cross-country skiing, mountain biking, horseback riding, hunting, trapping, camping, geocaching, bird watching, outdoor photography, and nature study. Some of these activities are discussed below.

Trails

Access to the forest interior is provided by 10 miles of marked trails, as well as state forest roads and local roads. (The map pin is located on Belmont Road/State Route 244 at Stuck Hill Road.) Horseback riding is very popular in this state forest and is allowed on marked trails from June 1 to September 30. A large parking area, a kiosk with trail maps, covered picnic tables, and tie stalls for horses are located on Stuck Hill/Hemlock Hill Road just north of State Route 244. Snowmobiling

There are no maintained snowmobile trails in this state forest. The use of snowmobiles and ATVs is prohibited on the multi-use trails.

Fishing

The headwaters of Vandermark Creek flow through the southeastern portion of this property and might provide fishing for brook trout during the spring. Otherwise, there is no fishable water in this state forest.   

Hunting and Trapping

This state forest provides opportunities for both small game and big game hunting. Game species commonly found here include white-tailed deer, rabbit, ruffed grouse, and turkey. Hunting and trapping are permitted on the property in accordance with all game regulations unless otherwise posted.

Birding

Bird species commonly seen in this type of environment include a variety of songbirds, turkey, and ruffed grouse. An eBird list of bird species observed at this location has not yet been posted. Click on eBird under Links to see how you can make a posting.

Camping

There are no formal campsites on this property; however, several primitive campsites are available. Elsewhere, individuals may set up camp at any location that is at least 150 feet from water bodies, streams, roads, and trails. See Links for additional regulations.
